History of "The Straggler's Inn"A longtime Wellington landmark, the historic 'Straggler's Inn' was built in preparation for the construction of the first wooden bridge across the Macquarie River in 1866. The Inn previously had stables used by the Cobb & Co Coaches as they passed through the Wellington Valley.
The building has undergone a number of name changes and face-lifts over the years, but from the outside remains largely unchanged from its original condition. Less than one year after opening the Straggler's Inn became the Commercial Hotel, and the name changed again in 1905 to the Commonwealth Hotel. After the 1920's the Inn was converted into a boarding house for the next 40 years - until the Inn was reduced to a block of four flats, the biggest bringing in $13 rent per week. It wasn't until 1981 that Danny's father Geoff Hawke bought the old Inn to house his Macquarie View Antique business, it has been Danny's family home ever since. |
